Not to be used to treat hemolytic anemias unless Fe deficiency state also exists. Do not administer therapeutic Fe doses >6 mth. Administration of vit B12 w/ doses >10 mcg daily may produce haematological response in patients w/ folate deficiency, indiscriminate use may mask precise diagnosis.
GI side effects eg, nausea, vomiting, bloating, & upper abdominal discomfort w/ high Fe doses (usually elemental Fe >120 mg/day); temporary staining of teeth; darker in color stools.
Fe: Decreased absorption w/ antacids. Reduced absorption of both drugs w/ tetracyclines. Decreased conc of quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin). Delayed responses to Fe therapy especially in patients w/ Fe deficiency anemia w/ concomitant intake of chloramphenicol. May decrease absorption & reduce bioavailability of carbidopa, levodopa, methyldopa & penicillamine.
